A repeater is a combination of a receiver and a transmitter. It is placed at intervals along a communication path to combat attenuation. It picks up the weak (attenuated) signal, amplifies it, and regenerates its shape (especially important in digital systems) before retransmitting it. This effectively extends the range of the communication system without the signal becoming unreadable due to loss of strength or accumulated distortion.
