Attenuation is the gradual loss of signal strength (intensity/power) as it travels through a communication medium. It is usually measured in decibels ($dB$). Causes include absorption by the medium, scattering, and geometric spreading. To overcome attenuation in long-distance systems, 'amplifiers' or 'repeaters' are placed at regular intervals to boost the signal.
