When a solid conductor is placed in a changing magnetic field, circulating loops of current are induced throughout the bulk material.

• These are Eddy Currents.
• Because conductors have resistance, these currents dissipate energy as heat ($I^{2}R$ loss).
• To minimize this in transformers and motors, iron cores are laminated (divided into thin sheets insulated from each other) to break up the current paths.
