Strategies For Enhancement In Food Production

Single cell protein (SCP) refers to protein obtained from cultured microbial biomass such as bacteria, yeast, algae, and fungi grown on a large scale, and it is promoted as an alternative, supplementary source of protein-rich food to meet the demands of a growing population. For example, the blue-green alga Spirulina can be grown on materials like waste water and produces protein-, mineral-, vitamin-, and fat-rich biomass, while the mushroom Methylophilus methylotrophus is noted for its rapid biomass production. Biofortified crop is incorrect because that term refers to conventionally bred plants enriched in nutrients, not microbial biomass grown as protein. Somatic hybrid is wrong because it denotes a plant produced by fusing protoplasts of two species in tissue culture, unrelated to microbial protein. Totipotent callus is incorrect since it is an undifferentiated mass of plant cells in tissue culture, not a food protein source. As described in NCERT Class 12, Chapter 9 (Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production), SCP could reduce pressure on agricultural land. As a consistency check, only single cell protein matches the description of large-scale microbial biomass used as protein-rich food, confirming it as the correct term.
