Strategies For Enhancement In Food Production

Apiculture is the practice of rearing honeybees on a large scale to obtain commercially valuable products such as honey and beeswax, and the species most widely domesticated and reared in hives across the world is Apis mellifera, the Italian or European honeybee. It is favoured because it is relatively docile, stays in artificial beehives, produces large quantities of honey, and pollinates crops effectively, increasing agricultural yields. Apis dorsata is incorrect because it is the wild rock bee that is large and aggressive and not conveniently reared in managed hives for commercial beekeeping. Apis florea is wrong as it is a small wild bee that builds tiny single-comb nests and yields very little honey, making it unsuitable for large-scale apiculture. Bombyx mori is incorrect because it is the silkworm moth used in sericulture for silk production, not a honeybee at all. As mentioned in NCERT Class 12, Chapter 9 (Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production), apiculture also boosts pollination-dependent crop yields. As a consistency check, only Apis mellifera fits both the criterion of being a honeybee and being the most widely reared species for commercial honey production, confirming it as the correct choice.
