The strong nuclear force is the force that binds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus. It is characterized by being extremely strong (much stronger than the electrostatic repulsion between protons) but only over very short ranges (typically $\sim 10^{-15}$ meters or a few femtometers). Beyond this distance, the force drops off rapidly to zero.
