The temperature increases from 20∘C to 60∘C, so ΔT=40∘C. Substituting L0=50m, α=1.2×10−5/∘C and ΔT=40 gives ΔL=50×1.2×10−5×40=2.4×10−2m=24mm. The value 12 mm uses only half the temperature change.
